I have some very exciting news to share with you people, last week the Flight Centre announced they would like to pay me to pursue my passion! It seems you can make a career out of your hobby and I am the lucky one that gets to prove it.
Back in December the Flight Centre, under the leadership and inspiration of Gregg Tilston, began the search for Social Media Specialists to be based in each of their head offices around the world. You may have seen a tweet that went something like this:
Love Social Media? Do you live in London/New York/Toronto/Auckland/Australia? @flight_centre is hiring!
Well I saw this tweet and I thought, ‘I love social media, I live in London, Flight Centre would be a cool company to work for considering I am a travel addict. Tell me more.’
So I clicked on this link:
And I thought what an excellent recruitment campaign. Instead of accepting CV’s and a lot of potentially dull covering letters (I have been subjected to lots of these this week) the application process consisted of sending a link to your Blog, Twitter and LinkedIn profiles and two other sites of your choice. Although cultivating these sites and profiles for some years the actual application process for my dream job took me approximately 5 seconds. Amazing! I clicked send and urged my brain to forget all about it – not wanting to get my hopes up and needing to focus on an imminent event in San Diego to arrange for my current job instead.
Fast forward a few weeks; through a whirlwind of studying the job spec minutely, a telephone interview to Canada, face to face interviews in the midst of jet lag, research into the Flight Centre, sheer utter excitement at the potential this role has and what a great team I could be a part of, and here I am today delighted to announce my new role at Flight Centre UK.
Just in case you are not jealous enough already I have one final piece of exciting news. My first week on the job I’ll get to meet my new global team in person. I’m looking forward to brain storming, strategising and theorising with them on how Flight Centre is about to take the social media world by storm. To do this I have to fly to the Gold Coast of Australia.
Great start to a great job I hope.
