Packing Like A Pro With Muji To Go

I’ve been packing on autopilot for many years now. I assumed I was good at it because I had curbed my habit for over-packing and could throw everything in a case very quickly. So it wasn’t until Muji invited me to take a look at their Travel Shop and see how I could utilise the products that I realised I had been doing it ALL wrong. So very wrong.

I’d never appreciated the use of a garment bag until my recent trip to Las Vegas. Making use of a medium and small sized garment bag from the Muji range I realised that my undies travelled far neater if segregated from my shoes! In the smaller of the bags I packed all my underwear for the trip, thus being able to easily pop the package in a draw when we arrived at the hotel and know where to find my smalls at all times (usually I have to rummage through a jumble of clothes and shoes to find where I lodged them.) The larger garment bag was used to store my shoes and accessories on the way out and became my laundry bag on the way home. For once my suitcase was just as neat travelling home as it was travelling out – in fact, on both journeys it was neater than ever.

There were some other products that completely changed my opinion too. I’d always been too lazy to decant my toiletries into travel-sized bottles and packed the full sized product instead. Why would you do this? I’d been jealous in Sri Lanka of my friends hanging washbag that dangled everything she needed neatly near the shower. My unnecessarily large products, however, would be spread all over the joint wash space. I felt like a bad traveller. Because I was being one.

I decanted my products into the travel-sized bottles – it took 2 minutes and if you have a steady hand and clear aim you don’t even need the special funnel kit, you can just pour straight in. I packed my miniature bottles, deodorant, contact lenses, moisturiser, toothbrush and toothpaste (basically everything I need in the bathroom) into the washbag, which folded up into a neat parcel a fraction of the size of my usual toiletry collection. In Vegas my partner was very pleased to be able to see the sink and I loved having everything within arm’s reach of the shower.

I never thought something as simple as a zipped clear pouch would make my life easier but it has. This £3.95 item from Muji has become the carry case for my jewellery whilst I am on the road. It slips neatly into the netted section of my suitcase and now I know where all my favourite chunky necklaces are at any one time. I also packed one of Muji’s mini aluminium clocks because it is a huge bugbear of mine when a hotel room doesn’t have a clock near the bed, especially as I am shortsighted so can’t see anything unless it is right next to me! I also made use of the multi-purpose travel adapter that comes with a USP port; I could charge practically everything I rely on with just one gadget.

Packing compactly had left me lots of spare room in my luggage – an 85l, navy, hard case trolley from Muji – to bring souvenirs home from Vegas. The sleek looking luggage rolls smoothly on 4 wheels and comes with firm straps and zipped dividers to keep everything in its rightful place whilst in transit. Unpacking the case, although sad because my journey was over, was far more pleasant than the crumpled mess I usually drag home.

It’s taken 4 years of travel blogging but I think I finally know how to pack like a pro.

My makeup organizer is my life saver when packing. It works perfectly for fitting on those little things in one easily rolled up bag. Great tips!
