Ever wondered what the interiors of your favourite travel bloggers’ houses are decorated with? Well, I did! As I’ve recently been filling our new home in Melbourne with items that were bought on (or to remind us of) our travels it got me thinking what travel themed home decor you might find in the abodes of my well-travelled friends. So I reached out to them and asked if they would kindly give us a peek. Here 5 travel bloggers share their favourite travel-inspired art and souvenirs in their homes, along with the stories behind them.
Pack Your Passport
After two years of travelling in Australia as a couple, and a year in New Zealand learning how to be by myself again, Amsterdam was my first proper solo trip so it holds a lot of special memories. I remember feeling a mixture of excitement, pride, and nerves as I made my way from the airport into Amsterdam city centre, but it soon cemented itself as one of my favourite cities in the world. I’ve now visited twice more (once alone, and once with friends) and every time I’m there I feel completely at home. I bought this print to remind myself of that first trip alone and how far I’ve come since then.
Mr & Mrs Romance
We love picking up souvenirs as we travel, but having moved around the world twice for each other, we are selective on what we bring home. The Japanese print we collected on our first trip to Japan and the blue bowl is from our first trip to Greece together, where our friends got married; both precious travel memories.
However, our favourite things to bring back from our travels are our photos. We’ve got so many. It’s our plan to print them up and have a gallery wall of our travel images – that’s the plan anyway.
When we’re not on the road, we save our $5 notes and $2 coins in our travel fund for our next adventure.
In Salento, Colombia, I found a store selling reproductions of Colombia’s famous doors. This white one is the reproduction of a door in Cartagena, which fit perfectly with my room’s rainy day palette.
If you ever fly KLM business class, you get a KLM house! These super-collectible items, reproductions of actual houses throughout the Netherlands, are filled with booze. Mine sit on my bar cart. Since I live in Harlem I chose one from Haarlem!
This Battered Suitcase
My favourite souvenirs are always prints or artwork – my home is full of art from around the world. I collect art when I travel as it’s usually affordable and easy to transport, and I love buying directly from the artist; every time I look at my walls I know I’m surrounded by fantastic stories and great memories.
The Travel Journo
Until recently I thought a buffet was just somewhere you stuffed your face – not an item of furniture I’d spend endless time ‘styling’! Some of my favourite travel themed decor have pride of place here, including the Japanese Kimmidoll I bought on my first trip to Japan. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of Kimmidolls but each of the different characters has a symbolism, I think this one is meant to bring success!
Interestingly the print of Hosier Lane, Melbourne is something I won at a Visit Melbourne event years ago in London, who knew back then it would end up in my house in Melbourne!
I also love the Audrey Hepburn print as it was one of the first gifts Justin bought me when he was ‘wooing’ me. (Remember those days babe?!). Audrey has hung in our homes in Islington, Kilburn, Sydney and now Melbourne so she’s one well-travelled lady.
The little glass elephants were the favours at our Thai beach wedding. We bought them in Khao Lak as table decorations/gifts for guests and pocketed two for ourselves at the same time.
I’d love to know about the travel themed art and souvenirs that decorate your homes. Send me a pic on Twitter, FB, or Insta! Would you like a little tour of our new place? Let me know in the comments below and I’ll get snapping.
Thanks to all the bloggers who contributed to this piece and satisfied my curiosity. You’re legends.
